Rosh Hashanah

We love having visitors in Petals Class. Today Shelley came in to tell us a story about Jewish new year. The story was about a little boy who had a riddle to solve. His mom asked him to find a little red house with no windows, no doors and a star inside.” Do you know what it could be? Well the boy didn’t know so he went around to ask for help. A grandma told him that the wind could help. The wind guided the little boy to a tree and an apple dropped out of the tree. The boy went back to his mom with the apple to see if he solved the riddle. The apple is red, it has no windows, or door but where is the star? The mom took the apple, cut it sideways and opened it up. And what was inside? A STAR!! Wow we had no idea that there was a star inside. The teachers were also surprised. Shelley then told us that in apples and honey were foods that you eat around Jewish new year. She also taught us to say, “Shana tova umetukah” which means “Wishing you a sweet and happy new year”. We enjoyed the special apple and honey with our snack.

After we ate our delicious snack we sat around in a circle to test our hearing and touching senses. First, Kai introduced the instruments. We had a rain maker, maraca, tambourine, a shaker and a castanet. Then we passed the instruments around listened, examined and felt them. After that Kai hid the instruments under a blanket. He touched it made sounds with it and guessed what it was. Then it was our turn. We really had to concentrate to use our two senses. It was a difficult task for us as we’re not yet experienced with the instruments and how it  sounds and feels like. We gave hint to our friends by sounding our the first letter if they didn’t know it. We wanted to have plenty of park time so after the circle we checked if we were ready. Hat? Check! Sash? Check! Water bottle? Check! Shoes off? Ohh oh some of us need to take our shoes off before going to the park. We waited for our friends and off we went.

At the park we love running around with the ball and chasing our friends. Today Kai taught we a game called “Here comes the boulder”. He explained that a boulder is a big big rock and we don’t want to be caught under the rock when it rolls down the mountain. We started the game by saying “Here comes the boulder!” Then the teachers kicked the ball at us and we had to run away from it. If the boulder touches us we have to sit out until the next round. Some friend was a bit sad that they had to sit out but the teachers reminded them that it’s just a game. We ended up playing around five games! It was a lovely game and I’m sure we will play it more in the future. Thank you for reading our story! Have a wonderful long weekend! See you next week.
