Surfin' at Ohana

I t was cloudy and a little bit chilly this morning, so our teachers said that we might not be able to do water play today. In spite of the weather and temperature, we still found our way to keep ourselves busy in the classroom.
Morning Activities:
Right after we did our morning jobs, we started working on our table activities. In one of the tables, we saw some corks, colored foam shapes, toothpicks, pair of scissors and a hot glue. We wondered what we were going to make with these materials. Oh, it was a sailboat! First, we taped two corks together to make the boat and then, we cut a small piece of foam to make the sail. Lastly, our teacher helped us put them together using hot glue. On the other table, we made a surf board using colored construction paper. We cut along the lines and decorated our own surf board!
Free Play:
We took turns to work at the table. Some of us played with wooden blocks and made a tower. A, E and Ev were busy doing some puzzles. We had different puzzles that we chose to work on. We had a wide range of puzzles namely, animal puzzles, police car, fire engine and ambulance. It was interesting for some of us who did it for the first time. E, M and An played memory games. In this game we had to match two pictures together. We had to be very careful so we could remember the pictures. It was so exciting!
Circle Time:
Just before lunch time, we each had a turn to put our pictures doing surfing on our beach dis-play. We each made a comment while looking at ourselves on the display, Liezel then ask, “What are you doing in the picture?”
A: Dancing on the board
W: Getting some fish to eat.
E: Surfing
J: I’m going to the big wave.
K: I’m going to that side ( showing his right side) for the big wave.
E: I’m going to jump on the waves.
S: I’m heading to the top.
R: I’m going to surf around and jump over the wave.
T: ( looking at his picture) I’m almost going to bump into Kensei.
Liezel: What does surfing mean?
E: Surfing is when you go get on the wave and you catch the waves and run away from the wave like tag, when you play with your friends.
A: Like Moana she’s friends with the water.
S: Surfing have no engine.
J: We jump to the big wave or balance on the big wave.
R: My daddy practice one time in a temple.
K: My daddy surf too, he only fell one time.
L: Surfing is a water sport done in the ocean or sea. The surfers use their surf boards to catch the waves and ride in towards the sea shore.
Park Time:
We spent our our park time running around and playing games. We played two games. One was Fish, Fish, Swim which is like Duck, Duck, Goose. We also played Little Fish game where we had to run away from the sharks and the sharks were actually Liezel and Nimo. When they said, “Swim away fish!”, we all had to run away from them. We had so much playing with our friends and teachers.
