We Are All Unique

Who solves mysteries? What kind of profession who work on to solve different kinds of mysteries. We came up with some professions. Here they are:

Be: Spy!

Li: Police!

Mo: Ninja! They are very sneaky and only come out at night time.

K: Ninja at the park.

Ra: Real ninja is not. (There is no ninja.) Because you don’t see them even you wake up at night.

Kei: I see the Ohana album!

Ja: Sneaky people can see.

Ral: Detective!

Wi: Mystery Finder

S: Mystery box

Sa: Scientist

Vieda: Detectives and spies solve mysteries. Police officers and scientists too!

Then, Vieda showed us an enlarged picture of something.. Hmm, it got us thinking what it was. Our friends started to share what they thought it was. It is great to hear what others  have to say.  We may not have the same opinion at times, and yet we enjoy learning from our friends. Here are some of our ideas about the picture that we saw:

Ka: Hand fingers?

Ja It looks like “tatsumaki” (tornado).

Kei: (shows) Palm

Ry: Like thumb.

Li: It looks like your thumb printed.

Ai: that’s a finger. I think it’s an animal.

Si: A person’s finger

Wi: A gorilla’s finger print.

So: A bird’s egg!

Ral: A fingerprint of people.

Guess what it was? It is an enlarged picture of someone’s thumbprint! When we looked closely at it using a magnifying glass, we could actually see something else!

An: Like zebra stripes.

Si: I see big lines.

So: I see big lines and space.

Ra: I see a letter, numbers and a photo

Sa: I think it look like a .. Notes! It also looks like a duck egg.

A: Like stripes… bear foot!

Yu: Stripes.

In Flowers class, we really love exchanging ideas and thoughts.  We love to ask questions and observe things around us, too!  Today, we talked about fingerprints. When Vieda mentioned that even TWINS do not have the same fingerprints, we were surprised! Then she asked us what TWINS mean. It made us to think again…

M: Twins look like, when you were born the same born day.

Vieda: Do they have the same mommies?

M: No, not the same mommies.

Vieda: M and An have the same birthdays. Does that make them twins?

B: No, because they are not in the same family.

Li: When we had a birthday party, Sh, K, Ry and J birthdays but they are not twins.

Vieda: That’s right! Twins have only one mommy. They are inside their Mom’s tummy at the same time and are born on the same day.

Mo: But Mommy’s tummy will be broken!

Li: Some twins, you can also have six or three (babies).

Kei: In my Mommy’s tummy, Ri, Ky and Ki were all inside. K said he wants to come out, so I come out (first).

Ry: Some people don’t come from Mommy’s tummy.

Li: Sometimes it come our from private parts.

A: Even Mom and Dad don’t have the same fingerprint!. When we come out of Mommy’s tummy, we already have fingerprints. It’s not the same as our Moms”. Twin is wearing the same shirt and pants, too!

It was such an interesting discussion!  We learned that our fingerprints are unique Nobody has the same fingerprints as ours! Not even our family members. When we heard that Vieda will take our fingerprints, Li seemed a bit concerned so she asked, “You need to cut my finger?”. To which Jamie added, “(if you cut) We might die!”. Of course, our fingers were not cut off. We had a simple  fingerprint activity where we used baby powder and clear tape.  We also took turns in  taking a look at our own thumbs. We were surprised to see different kinds of lines on our thumbs, such as swirly, straight and cursive lines as well. We wonder how fingerprints can be used? That would be a great discussion for next time.

It was very interesting to see how our fingerprint looked like under a magnifying glass.  Our teachers took all of our fingerprints and are now glued on a black construction paper. It is fun looking at all the lines of our fingerprints! We could not even tell if the fingerprint is ours or not! Everyone’s fingerprint is unique!

We also had so much fun in our music class with John. We took a pose called an “akimbo” position. We tried to make sounds using our body. We stomped our feet, winked our eyes and even pat the floor. Then, we added sounds to the movement and had a fun singing as a group! Thank you so much, John for a wonderful music time!

As we have been talking about diversity, we learned that we may look different on the outside but we are the same inside. On the outside, our eyes or hair or skin color might look different, but we talked about how similar on the fact that we all have them!

Just before lunch time, we played a game called, “Who Am I?”. Can you guess whose eyes and hair these are?

Please try guessing them!

We had so many giggles and laughter as some of us could not tell which is our eye or hair picture. Some of our friends were not quite sure and mistook some of the photos as somebody else’s

L was still not quite sure if the eye picture is hers so An told her, “I think it’s you because I see the same as her in the picture! L stood next to her picture and smiled then said, “I’m still not sure if this is me!”.

We got a little confused for Ral and Wi’s hair pictures until a very confident comment from Ke saying, “ W! Because here is yesterday’s mask!” Awesome, K!

Can you guess whose eyes are these in the picture? While Wi and A said it’s Mo, M answered, “It’s E”. Please make a guess!

The most tricky part for one picture of our friend’s hair. Can you imagine that we had different answers for one picture. Out answers were: Sh, Ja, Be, Ma, Ki and Sa.  Would you like to guess whose hair is on the picture?

We had so much fun learning about how we could be different and at the same time have fun enjoying our differences! Indeed, DIVERSITY is our name!

Lots of love,

Flowers Class
