Our Healthy Lists
We talked about the big, bad germ today.
“But we can’t really see it,” M told us. “It’s small!” she explained.
She was right. This big baddie is actually very small and can’t be seen by the naked eye.
“But is very sick,” R said. Right! This big, bad germ has a name– coronavirus!
“Has anyone heard of that?” Pauline asked us. A lot of us raised our hands.
“I saw that on TV,” M said.
“Make us very sick,” R told us again. That’s also the reason why we have to sit at the edge of the carpet—
“—and we need to have a gap between our friends because of the germs,” A said. Our teachers also sadly informed us that that was the reason why some of our friends chose to stay at home.
“Like J,” A mentioned his Flowers Class friend. “He stay home because of the virus.”
Pauline let us watch a video of John singing “Wash Your Hands”, which made us excited!
“I watched it at home!” C said. We quickly mastered all the steps:
Step 1: Rub your hands together
Step 2: Rub the back of your hands
Step 3: Interlock your fingers and rub
Step 4: Clean your fingernails
Step 5: Don’t forget to rub your thumb
Step 6: Rinse, rinse your hands
We also watched the exercise video, the one that had both Polly and Pauline! We giggled as we watched Polly.
“That’s you!” A said, pointing to Pauline, who feigned innocence.
“Someone’s eating potato chips!” Sayaka pointed out. Hmm.. We wonder who could that be???
“Based on the videos, how do we keep our body healthy?” Pauline asked us.
“Wash your hands,” C said.
“Having a bath helps,” A said. “We use soap and wash our whoooooooole body!” she said while pretending to rub soap all over her body.
“I close my eyes when I wash my hair,” A said. It must be because sometimes, when we use shampoo (That’s what we use to wash our hair), they might get in our eyes and—
“It’s ouchie,” M said.
“I use conditioner, too!” A said, while shaking her head from side to side.
“I eat the bubbles when I have a bath, hehe!” A said, and we laughed.
Together, we listed down things that can help us become healthy:
1. Washing our hands
2. Always taking a bath
3. “EXERCISE!” A excitedly called out.
“Makes us strong!” A said. So, even if we are inside the house, we can still do some exercises. Just like the yoga forms that Sayaka taught us, we can do them at home, too!
“How about potato chips? Can they make us healthy?” Pauline asked.
“Potatoes are healthy, but potato chips are not,” A pointed out. That’s right, potato chips belong in the category of junk food. If fruits, vegetables, and meat contain lots of vitamins and minerals (These make our body healthy), then junk food only has a teeny, tiny bit of vitamins and minerals. If Pauline always ate junk food every day, and R always ate fruits, vegetables, and meat, and then they both exercise together, R will be so strong and fast and full of energy— and Pauline will be weak, slow, and will easily get tired. So, it’s alright to eat junk food once in a while— we mentioned to our teachers that we love our chocolates, candies, and ice cream (At this, Amelia’s eyes widened and sparkled), but not always, not every day.
“Body not grow stronger,” A agreed. So, therefore:
4. “Eating healthy food– junk food sometimes”, U said, rounding out our list.
Since we were talking all about a healthy body, it was relevant that we read “My Five Senses” by Margaret Miller.
“What are ‘senses’?” R asked. Good question! The book talked about what our eyes, ears, nose, and mouth can do. So we concluded that the five senses were:
1. Seeing
2. Hearing
3. Smelling
4. Tasting
5. Touching/ feeling
Phew! We listed out a lot of things for today! After that, we voted on what to do before lunch time, as we had some extra time to spare. Do you know what the majority voted for? It’s NOT freeze dance! Okay, it IS actually freeze dance. Can you blame us? We love dancing, and we will take every opportunity we can to dance!
That concludes our first day back in school, as we did our best to “socially distance” ourselves from our friends and teachers. We couldn’t help it but we tried to give hugs to our teachers– but they explained to us that “We love you so much, but we can’t give hugs right now…” They said sadly.
“WHY???” We asked incredulously.
“It’s because of the virus. We have to be careful not to share germs with each other,” They sadly explained.
“If the virus is gone, THEN we can give hugs to each other,” M explained to us. Our teachers promised to give us big, BIG hugs once this virus situation is over! We really hope that will come the soonest!
Love,
