Bones in our Body

We have been learning a lot about our body. So far, we have discovered that we have body parts that we see from the outside and those that we do not because they are inside. The interesting part is that we may look different, but we have the same body parts (both on the inside and the outside).

Ad and Li volunteered to be our drawing models yesterday. When we traced their bodies, Ad decided to lie down on the floor face down while Li was face up. When we completed our drawings, we noticed some things.

Ke: We don’t have the same body parts on the front and back.

Am: This one (Li) has face, the back doesn’t have.

Ke: Ad doesn’t have a mouth.

Am: The feet are sliding but the feet are not.

Cr: The other hands are going up and the other hands are going down.

Kei: Li is looking up and Ad can see only down.

Ke: Li’s feet is more open than Ad.

Ri: Li’s hands are down. Ad’s hands are up.

We had these body drawings up in the room today. We looked at how we thought bones looked like and where we can find them in our body.  Guess what? There was a light table with black and white sheets called x-rays. Yu said, “X-rays are pictures of everything we have inside our body”.  These x-rays show our bones. Just before we started talking more about them, some of our friends shared how they think bones help our body. Ad mentioned that if we don’t have bones, “Someone will need to move us”. Ka said, “Maybe somebody has to hold us up”.  That could be so true! Without our bones, we could be like a puppet just like the Peppa the Pig puppet that Vieda showed us. The puppet could not move unless Vieda moved it! We are so thankful that we have bones!

Speaking about our bones, we took turns in guessing the total number of bones in our body. The numbers range from 4 to 200 +! And Ch guessed it correctly! We have a total of 206 bones in our body.

LIGHT TABLE ACTIVITY

At circle time, we sat around our light table. Vieda placed one x-ray film at a time, and we tried to guess which body part it was. It was interesting to observe that the x-ray shows the shape of our bone. It was easy for us to guess the x-rays for our hands, feet, and legs. However, there were three x-rays that we found quite challenging.  Please read through our guesses below:

(1) RIB CAGE

Ke: stomach and food pipe

Ka: This is our esophagus.

Kea: chest bone. Another bone is part of our arm.

Cr: That’s our spine.

Ad: Lungs

(2) HIP BONE

Yu: stomach

Ke: chest

Am: esophagus and stomach

Ch: This is our bum, and these are our feet.

Ak: This is our esophagus, chest, and leg.

Ka: Our esophagus, feet and omata

Ke: My sides, food pipe, and lungs

Ke: I think this part is connection to the legs. I think the heart is here.

(3) BRAIN

Yu: It’s Mo’s Mom’s tummy

Ch: small intestines

Ke: our tummy

Ad: It’s our brain.

Li: our tummy

Ke: Large intestines

Ad: We can’t see the bone of the people who do an x-ray. I’m gonna tell my Dad to work on an x-ray because he has tools.

Do you think you would be able to guess these x-rays correctly? We wanted to do more, but it was almost lunch time. We are looking forward to exploring more about bones and x-rays.

 CIRCLE TIME

Because Halloween is just around the corner, we started off our circle time by singing Knock, Knock, Trick or Treat. This time, we sang it to the name of  what we want to be for Halloween. We even posed the character that we represent!

Am: Dinosaur                                       Li: Ninja

Ke: Grandpa                                       Ad: Flash

Ka: Nezuko                                              Ch: Triceratops

Ak: Stitch                                                   Ke: Lizard

Yu: Butterfly                                           Ki: Witch

Ri: a little witch

We cannot wait to see everyone in their special attire on Friday!

QUESTION OF THE DAY: Do our bones grow?

Well, it was not easy to answer this question. After carefully thinking about it, we shared with everyone the reason why we chose YES or NO.

For our friends who think that our bones DO NOT grow, here are the reasons:

Ke: Our bones don’t grow if you don’t drink a lot of water.

Ch: Because if the hard bones don’t grow, what do we do? Wait, I changed my mind. Our bones grow when we sleep.

Ki: If bones don’t grow, we can still play in the park.

Ad: If our bones grow, we might break.

Ka: Bones are hard and don’t grow.

Ke: Bones no growing everybody. If bones grow, we are so so like monster.

And for those who think that bones GROW:

Am: They need to grow strong.

Li: Our body growing, our bone is small so small won’t work. We grow so bones grow, too!

Yu: Bones grow from small to big.

Ak: We have so many bones and soft ones don’t know grow and hard ones don’t grow.

Brilliant ideas! Well, we have learned that our bones grow until we turn 21 years old! The thought of growing as tall as our Dads make us feel so thrilled!

As what Am mentioned, our bones need to grow strong. So, we talked a bit about foods that can help us build strong bones and those that may not.  Vieda showed us two pictures, but even before she did, some of us already named them! We know that vegetables such as broccoli and spinach are good for our bones. We also know that sweet snacks such as chocolate and candy may not be good for our bones as well. We wonder how well our friends can remember the foods that are good and not-so-good for our bones!

Another day full of learning about bones had passed. We still have so many things to ask about our bones. As our teachers suggested, we will try to keep our questions in our brain and share them tomorrow.

We had a wonderful time making our pencil holder and working on our Thank You card for our community helpers. We hope you enjoyed your day as well!

            See you all again tomorrow!

Love,
