Our Father's Day Backyard Grill

We took this special opportunity that many daddies have the day– off, as it is a national holiday- so that’s why even though Father’s Day is still a long way off, we celebrated it today!

The teachers were buzzing around like bees when we arrived. The smell of grilled food wafted through the door– yum! We saved our daddies a seat at the table and waited for them to arrive. When they did, they sat down together with us, as teachers put trays of hotdog buns, bacon, and sausages. Our teachers said that we should ask our daddies what they want to eat, and offer them food and serve them– but we had other plans in mind. Heehee. We took a bite out of our daddies’ food, and some of us happily had their share. All the daddies chatted with one another while eating– it was great to finally see them together, and celebrate them.

We played the “Newspaper Dance”, once everyone was done eating. This is played by spreading out a sheet of newspaper on the floor, and dancing together with our daddies while the music is playing. When the music stops, we need to make sure that we are inside our newspaper. If our feet are outside, then that means we are out of the game. The problem is, we need to fold our sheet of newspaper smaller and smaller! This made for a good laugh as we saw how competitive dads can be, and how creative they can be in thinking of ways to cheat- ahem- win the game. :P

The teachers encouraged all the dads to bust out their secret dance moves– and they did not disappoint! We saw them grooving’ and shakin’- certainly they can give famous boy groups these days (Such as those K– Pop ones)  a run for their money.

Because the daddies were really good at playing the game, instead of one winner, we had three! The prize was: recognition! We clapped our hands eagerly as we congratulated AND recognized our daddy– child winners: T and S, A and H, and T and A.

We sang “I love you, Daddy” and “Skidamarink” as Nimo played the ukulele. We then gave our presents for our daddies– a keychain! One side had our picture on it holding the sign “My dad is THE BEST!”, and the other side had our fingerprints making a heart– shape, with the words “ I  <3  U” . It looked really nice, and we hope it’s something our daddies can use all the time.

Some of our friends cried a bit as our daddies left; after calming down, we ate our snacks and got ready for park time. We read the book “Me on the Map” by Joan Sweeney. From our topic last week about planets, we focused more on planet—

“Earth!” we chorused.

“It’s the planet with water,” A said. The book started with the girl in her bedroom. The bedroom is in her house, her house is on the street, and their street is in the town. The town is in a state called Kansas, and Kansas is in a country called U.S.A. U.S.A. is on planet Earth! We then tried to figure out where we all are right now– We are on planet Earth, on a country called Japan, in a city called Tokyo, in a ward called Minato– ku, in a district called Azabu– juban, and in a school called Ohana! Phew! That was long!

We took a look at the Earth’s picture and pointed out that the blue parts were all water, and the green and brown parts were land. Land is where we can find our school, our home, Disneyland, parks, airports, buildings, etc.

We went to the park after and found our Buds and Flowers Class friends  there. We hope they had a great Father’s Day celebration, too!

Love,
