Who Keeps the Shelves Stocked?

March 2, 2026

Happy Monday! We’re excited to begin another week in Flowers Class, the first week in March!

QUESTION OF THE DAY

E & R: Do you like shopping?

Almost everyone said yes, so we all shared what we like to buy when we go shopping!

K: Toys!
S: Toys and juice.
S: Walkie talkies and flashlight.
E: Chocolate and chocolate toys.
R: Trains and robot.
K: I don’t like to buy anything.
T: Chocolate.
I: Toys.
A: Toys and chocolate.
S: Chocolate.

Some of us even have favorite stores!

S: Toys R Us! So many toys!
M: Lawson!
S: Toy shop!
R: Pokemon shop!

We looked at some pictures of some different shops and called out the ones we knew.

K: Seijo Ishi!
M: Lawson!
R: Aeon! Ito Yokado! Family Mart!
E: 7 Eleven!
S: Is that a vending machine!

We grouped the shops into three categories.

R: Supermarket
K: Conbini
S: Vending machine

We learned that conbini comes from the English word convenience and is much easier to say. Vending machine is also a bit hard to say, but it’s more fun to say it in Japanese; jidohanbaiki!

We shared what we know about how shops work.

R: They open the truck and put it in the store and people buy it and make something.
K: The people put it on the shelf and then people buy it so they need to push it and push it.
S: Sometimes they go by themselves. The camera sees it.

We had fun explaining how the clerks at the store keep the shelves stocked and thought it must be exhausting to keep moving the items to the front of the shelf after someone buys it, although we’ve seen some automatic ones too!

Is it important to have people who work in the shops and stores we visit?

R: If they don’t put it, we can’t buy it, then you will eat nothing!

We laughed at the thought of each of us having a garden for fruits and vegetables, cows for milk, chicken for eggs, etc. at home and are very thankful that we can quickly buy everything we need for dinner tonight at the supermarket!

Have a wonderful evening!
