Happy Friday! It’s the last day of summer school! It’s been fun exploring so many different environments and we’ve especially loved learning about the ocean this week!
QUESTION OF THE DAY
We shared some of the things that we see/have seen at the beach.
D: I saw fishes. I dug a trench. I saw sea creatures. It came out of the hole and ate Okinawa!
A: I went to the beach and saw crabs.
L: An eel
R: I saw a snake! A sea snake!
H: I saw a dolphin.
G: I saw an electric fish.
M: I saw a sea turtle and sea snake.
M: I saw shells and sand.
After M mentioned the sand, we thought it was a good time to discuss our question of the day!
R: Are sand and rocks the same?
H: The rocks roll and roll until they get smaller and smaller until we get sand.
R: If you smash a big and small rock so many times, it will turn into sand.
K: Sand comes from the water.
A: When the rocks are in the water, they sprinkle and turn into sand.
We decided to test H and R’s theory about rocks smashing into each other to make sand. We took some rocks, put them in a metal container, and took turns shaking the container. Then we took off the lid, and a puff of dust came out! We could see that a small bit of sand was in the container!
A: We broke a lot and if we do more it’ll make more sand!
The sand from the rocks was a gray color. Then we filled the container with shells and did the same thing. We got white sand! We learned that the sand at beaches comes from rocks and other things like shells and coral. Depending on what material the sand original came from, the color of the sand changes. What color of sand have we seen at the beach before?
K: Black!
G: Pink!
M: Sometimes a little bit green.
It was fun to make our own sand. We wondered how long it would take for the rocks to turn completely into sand. It must be a long time!
QUIZ
We played a quiz game to test our knowledge about the things we learned this week. Here are some of the questions and answers.
What zone is at the top of the ocean?
G: Sunlight zone!
What zone is at the bottom of the ocean?
K: Midnight!
How many hearts does an octopus have?
H: Three!
Which water did the egg float in?
J: Salt water!
What is the name of the famous clownfish who stars in a movie?
D: Nemo!
We all have really good memories, but a few questions were a bit too difficult to remember. Do our family members know the answers?
What makes food for coral using sunlight?
What is the name of the small animal that turns into coral?
What a great way to end our week and summer school program! We’ve had a lot of fun and learned many things about the world around us. We made new friends and enjoyed spending time with each other as we laughed and played. Thanks to everyone who joined us and helped create a wonderful experience over the past six weeks! We hope you all have a safe and happy summer break!
