Paper Sumo

Today we began our morning by revisiting our classroom rules. we practiced sitting still, keeping our bodies calm, and staying quiet for 30 seconds and today we did 47 seconds! Next, we reviewed what we learned yesterday about paper. We recalled that we crumpled newspaper and used it to play trashketball.

D: Zip your lips.

M: Ears listening.

T: Sit nicely. giraffe

D: Hands and feet quiet.

J: Eyes on the speaker.

For our question of the day, we asked, ” Can we use paper more than once?” Many friends shared their ideas and we remembered about the story about the bear who cuts trees to make paper airplanes. We realized we need to use paper more than once. 

D:  Can we fold small?

M: Can we use paper more than once? 

What do we do with the newspaper when we finished reading it?

M: rip and draw

D: I don’t know. Throw it and read it

J: You just buy again

E: When you finish, you can draw it or make a paper hat or origami

What do we do with paper in Flowers?

E: We always draw on them

Why is it important to use paper more than once?

J: (The bear from the book) take the tree.

Where does paper come from?

M: trees

K: I want to use it again.

J: He’s gonna go to garbage truck

E: When I smell the garbage truck , I nearly choke.

J: He just do like this! (squishing garbage gesture)

M: Wheels that will move it.

J: The water bottle go with the water bottle.

Why do we need to tie the paper together?

M: It’s not gonna be whooshed to the sky!

Have you tried eating soup?

E: My favorite soup is with broccoli and lettuce.

L: I like corn soup

S: Corn soup

T: steak

M: I like corn soup too!

Have you seen colored paper in our classroom?

M: I see pink.

E: orange, red, black

Then, we tried recycling some brown paper bags. We thought of ways to give the brown bag a new purpose instead of throwing it. A friend thought it could be a puppet, while other friends decided to make it into a pinata.

D: It’s a puppet

E: We can make it into a paper and we can draw on it.

D: You color it and rip it and put it in the water.

M: We draw on the paper

K: I don’t know

T: I don’t know.

E: I want to make a pinata

J: me too

K: I want to make pinata too

To end our lesson, we turned an empty tissue paper box into “Dohyo” (Sumo official stage) and made a origami sumo wrestler. We tried knocking our friend’s Sumo wrestler off the stage and it was a lot of fun.

E: I’m going to win!

K: No, I will win
