This week in Flowers, our learning journey will take us across the globe. We began looking at the globe and we pointed where the deserts and arctic could be. The desert is in the middle of the Earth (equator), where the sun shines so bright! That’s why it’s hot and dry. Then we looked all the way to the top of the Earth (North Pole) where the arctic is.This place doesn’t get much sunlight, so it’s very cold.
- Review
M: Rainforest! Emergent!
S: Canopy!, Understory
M/S: Forest Floor
M: warm
N: rainy
M:mountains!
S: pine trees
M: Desert! Hot and dry
S: the floor cracks
M: River! Cattails!wetlands
- Arctic Introduction
Where are the deserts located?
S: In the middle of the Earth then move up a little bit
What is the middle of the Earth called?
M: emergent??
Flowers:?????
N: ah yeah, equator!
F: Equator!!
Why do you think the desert is located near the equator?
S: The sun is strong here
How is the weather in this area ( top part of the Earth)
S: It’s cold!
Why?
N: It’s farthest from the equator and the sun doesn’t hit that
- Fun Facts we learned
- Arctic is in the North Pole, while Antarctica is in the South Pole
- Both are cold but Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth.
- The Arctic is surrounded by land while Antarctica is surrounded by water.
- If you dig a hole in the Arctic you will find water, while in Antarctica you will find land.
- Polar bears live in the Arctic while Penguins live in Antarctica.
- Both places experience, polar night (24 hours no sun) and midnight sun (daylight at night)
S: I want to go to Antarctica and dig!
N: Walruses don’t get cold because they’re so big and fat
- Question of the Day: Does warm weather melt ice?
D: Yes, because there is penguin and polar bears in the water. Then they play with the ice.
R: I don’t know
K: Yes, because the ice comes too hot, the ice will melt.
N: Yes, because plants don’t feel anything, so they only… But animals, if they get an ouchie, they will hurt. Polar bears might not be smart enough.
M: No,when you are freezing and it will never melt.
K: No, because warm water cannot break things
J: The ice is not melting
S: It’s not hot enough
To explore more, we did an activity comparing how ice melts in warm and cold weather. We labelled two trays Arctic and Non-Arctic and placed an ice cube in each tray. We put one tray in the freezer and the other one on the table. We waited for 10 minutes and we learned that ice melts faster in warm spots, just like in the desert! In the Arctic, ice melts slowly.
N: It’s not so cold so it didn’t melt that much
M: The one in the freezer was so so so cold, but the other one melted
J: I’m so excited (to touch)
R: It’s cold!
K: This one ( the ice cube in the freezer)more cold.
We had so much fun exploring the climate , geography of a new habitat; the Arctic! Have a nice evening. See you all tomorrow!
Love,
