Can you feel your blood?

Wednesday October 8th

Hello everyone,

Today we looked at something that everyone has been curious about recently… blood. On the tables today we had the body puzzles and the doctor kit. Everyone was so excited to be doctors they enjoyed giving teachers injections and seeing where all of the organs live in the body using the apron.

Circle time

Question of the day- Do you feel your blood moving?

J: your blood is inside your body. It is small so we cant feel our blood

Ja: its here (arm)

I: all of here

R: its in the blue ones (veins)

L: I have here (points to hand)

What does blood do?

M: when you fall down blood will leak. Your blood might get weaker or smaller.

P: blood everywhere

Then we felt our wrist to see if we could feel our pulse.

E: I feel something popping up

S: I don’t feel anything

How many liters of blood in our bodies?

M: 15, 7, 3

P: 20

K: 100

Then we learnt that the real answer is 2.5liters of blood in our bodies.

Book/ puppet introduction.

What is oxygen?

I; blood

M: breath

E: its when we take a big breath.

We learnt that our blood has three jobs. To give our organs oxygen, to take away the carbon dioxide that we breath out and then to fight infection.

M: that means to fight germs

Yes we get infections from germs.

We learned about the four components of our blood. We have the red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. We all did a good job of pronouncing all of these big words.

We split into two groups and learnt about what the red blood cells and the white blood cells do. For the red we practiced our team work to pass two balls back and forth just like the way the red blood cells pass oxygen and carbon dioxide back and forth

For the white blood cells we sat in a circle. The white blood cells job is to detect germs and tell them “no thank you germs” so that our body is protected. One friend was the white blood cell and left the circle whilst one other friend hid the germ and the white blood cell friend came back and had to guess who has the germ.

What a busy day learning all about blood and the way it helps us. Have a great evening!
