June 18,2025

Day 3 of Rivers and Wetlands

Today we continued our journey into the world of rivers and wetlands. We focused on the animals that live in and around these watery places.

Question of the Day: Can animals live in both land and water?

M: Yes, because elephants live in land and dolphin and whales and turtles and shark lives in the water. So they swim. They cannot live on the land . Some animals that live on the land can drink water so their nose or mouth can go in the water.

A: Hippos can go in the water, but not the head

M: They can go for maybe 20 minutes, but not forever

K: Water is animals live in no water. Frog is go to the water and land.

M: because some animals, cannot live in the water.

E: I don’t know if he can go in the water.

N: no

E: Why can’t hippos go under water?

M: because they can’t breathe

Evita: Why can fish stay underwater?

M: They have no nose.

M: They have something special here. They have gills. They swin so fast , and the water goes in.

After our discussion, we learned that alligators, beavers, frogs, and ducks can live in both land and wetlands where they find food and shelter.

For story time, we read, “Can Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate?” This fun story explains how different animals survive in cold weather. This led us to focus on the animals that live both in land and water, how do they stay warm underwater?

M: (Monkey’s taking hot baths) yes! In Japan they swim in the onsen

M: Oh yeah!

M: (Do honeybees use teamwork?) Yes, the queen bee lays eggs and the bees protect the eggs

M: (Do birds fly south?) Yes and No??? So they fly and come back?* mimics a bird migrating for the winter.

  • Homework: How do alligators and frogs stay warm in the water?

After crafting our jumping frog from the toilet paper roll, we painted this morning, we tested which frog will jump the farthest. In the end, Kenji’s frog jumped the farthest!
