Happy Thursday! Our trek through the frozen tundra marches on as we learn about how people survive there!
CIRCLE TIME
We began our circle time by learning more about some of the arctic animals we were introduced to yesterday.
N: Polar bear!
We learned that their prey is any small animal, especially seals. Polar bears sit next to a hole in the ice waiting for a seal to come out.
S: Prey is the thing animals eat.
We also learned about orcas!
M: Orcas eat whales!
M: They also eat sharks!
Next animal!
M: Starts with W…walrus!
We learned that walrus boys often fight each other and live separately from the girls.
D: It’s stuck on the ice!
QUESTION OF THE DAY
Can a tower of rocks help you?
We shared some things that people in the arctic build.
S: People make igloos and cut down trees for a fire.
N: They make igloo, cut down trees, make a boat like a canoe that you can sleep in.
We looked at a picture of an igloo!
K: I made a snow house. It was very tall!
We also saw a structure made using whale bones, and something called Inuksuk, which are human like stacks of rocks used to tell direction or let people know where to find food. Some of the rocks were so big!
N: How do they lift the rocks?
S: They have big machines and cranes.
We learned that they didn’t have machines or cranes, and that people put them their by hand.
K: Too many people!
It must have taken a lot of people to lift them! We tried making our own out of blocks!
Have a wonderful evening! See you tomorrow!
