Blood and Oxygen

Happy Monday! It’s the beginning of a new week! We hope the weather will be nicer this week, but it was still cold and rainy this morning. We talked about what it’s like to come to school when it’s raining.

Au: My mommy had the umbrella and I got wet. I didn’t bring umbrella because my mommy had, and you can have two people. You can get boots that splash in the water and you can run fast to not get wet.

Ti: I was in the car. I wasn’t even wet. I open the car cover and it wasn’t raining.

Au: If you go to school fast then you can get a bike in the rain. If you go on the water in the bike, the water goes up!

Da: I go in the bike and I didn’t get wet because it has something special in the bike that I go inside and I don’t get wet.

Weekend Discussion

We started our circle time talking about what we did on the weekend.

Co: Pool. I swim by myself.

Br: I played with building blocks. I build soap dispenser. I did it by myself.

An: I went swim. Mama was holding me and then I swim by myself.

Hi: I played with Br. at the park.

Br: I played with the ball.

Hi: First I just rest in the seat, then I played with Br.

Be: I went to the gym and played basketball. I win. I beat mommy and daddy.

Ti: I went to school the whole time. After school I had a weekend and the weekend wasn’t full. School is more fun than the weekend. There’s nothing to play and I don’t know which toy to play with.

Au: Ti., if you don’t like weekend, you can go to the store to get some candies!

Ti: I don’t like candy and I don’t really like sweet things.

Au: You can make cake candies!

Be: That sounds very sweet.

Da: Ti., only try.

Au: Let’s think about another food Ti. will like. Maybe apples!

Ti: That’s a good idea. I eat apples!

Then Hi. told us all what happened to her brother on the weekend.

Hi: My brother took off his tooth! No more! He was eating watermelon then his tooth fall out!

Ti: She mean the grown up teeth.

Hi: My brother tooth took off and my grandpa is almost teeth going to take off!

Da: Your grandpa cannot talk!?

Hi: He can talk yet

Ti: I have a grown up tooth. There was in a tooth. Its just grow by itself. It didn’t even come off. It’s really in the side. There is a grown up tooth there.

We had fun talking about our teeth and thought it was kind of funny that our teeth can fall out. We wondered what we would look like and how we could talk if we didn’t have teeth.

Question of the Day (Is blood important?)

We’ve been talking a lot about our bodies and specifically our heart for the last week. We know that our heart pumps blood to our entire body and that blood can come out of our skin if we get a cut or scrape, but we still don’t know what blood does. We tried to figure out why it’s important…

Ti: Because if there’s no blood, well, I don’t know. I just think that blood is important.

Da: Because the blood is in the skin and the heart pumping the blood go in the heart. The blood has eyes and a mouth and it says that it’s important.

Be: The blood pumping gives us energy.

We all drew a picture of what we thought our heart looks like on the whiteboard, so that we could compare it with a heart drawing in a book. Some of us had a pretty good idea of what it looks like.

Cameron asked us if we remembered the homework that Vieda gave us on Friday. She wanted us to ask our parents to check if our heart beats when we are sleeping.

Da: I was sleeping and my mom comes in and checks my heart pumping. The heart pump when I’m sleeping.

Co: It’s pumping. Mommy check it.

Then we learned that there is something inside of our blood that is being carried to all the parts of our bodies. Be. told us that it is called oxygen. We’re not sure what oxygen is…

Au: Oxygen is the blood if you fall down that oxygen make you hurt.

Be: Oxygen is the thing when you fall, it hurts.

Cameron gave us a hint about what oxygen is. He told us that our blood gets oxygen from our lungs.

Co: This! (inside mouth) (tongue)

Ka: It’s not lung, it’s tongue.

Our homework for today is to find out what oxygen is or what our lungs are. We’ll keep learning about our heart and blood and what they are doing for us.

Story Time Heart of the Tiger by Glenda Millard

This book told the story about a boy and a wooden tiger that held a secret in its heart. But the secret could not be discovered without sacrificing something.

Since the weather was still a little cold and there was a possibility of rain, we decided not to go to the park again today, and instead played a few games and danced to some music. Hopefully we can go to the park tomorrow!

Have a wonderful evening! See you tomorrow!
