Everyone's different and yet we are the same
"If all the world were paperAnd all the sea were ink, If all the trees were bread and cheese What would we do for drink?”
Today we helped our plants drink up the water that we fed them and we also drank a lot of water because it was a lot warmer in the park. We learnt in KIDFIT quite a long time ago, that our bodies have mostly water inside them so we were wondering why do we have to drink water each day? Our teachers asked us if we knew what the drops of water on our skin is called, and why our hair gets wet underneath our hats. Well, some of us know that the word is called “sweat” or “perspire”. This means that the water inside of our bodies comes out on our skin. So, how do we get the water back inside our bodies? Oh, so that is why we drink water! Sometimes
the answers are so simple however we like to think about them ourselves and then find our own answers.
Today we spent time completing our Mother’s Day project and our ‘koi nobori’ for “Kodomo no hi”. With some of our activities our teachers vary them based on our skills and abilities. With our Mother’s Day things that we have made, some of us are still developing our language and therefore were not able to fully answer the questions that our teachers were asking. This is one example of how our teachers work focusing on our individual needs while also challenging us in other ways.
Today we made faces on a piece of bread. We sat at the table and looked at the things that were on it. There were carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and peppers. Some of them were cut up into shapes, and some were just as we would see them in the supermarket. We looked at all of the things and we were not sure what we were going to make. Shelley asked us what we thought and Adrien said: “Cookies”. Then we looked at the table and realised that these were not the right ingredients for making cookies. Adrien said: “We need play dough”.
Cookies are made from dough which is similar to play dough. We spoke about the shapes of the different vegetables andthe slice of bread. We then spread some margarine onto the bread and looked at our friends and teachers faces to see what we needed to put on the bread. We thought of eyes, ears, a nose, a mouth and hair. We chose the vegetables that we wanted to use and you can see what they looked like when we were finished.
At snack time, we first ate our snacks that our mums had prepared for us and then we ate the bread with a face on it. Many of us were not so happy about eating the vegetables but we did eat the bread; and then asked for more bread. However today we only had one piece of bread per person. When it came to lunch time, many of us had eaten too much and didn’t have too much room for our lunch and then there were those of us who ate all of our lunch; and some of our left over snack. Vincent saved some of his strawberries from snack time, for his dessert.
Allie, Ryan, Tokutaro and Ava saw the magnet toys on the table and used them to make some symmetrical shapes that we had spoken about and looked at earlier in the week. They made a rectangle, square, triangle and circle. They then wanted to make a pyramid so our teachers showed us all how to make three sided pyramids and four sided pyramids as well as cubes. We didn’t realise that a block that looks square in shape is called a cube; we always called it a square.
Many of us decorated our eggs and made nests with shredded cellophane. We made the actual nest shape using a half of a plastic ball however they are not stable so we are trying to think of another way to keep them stable or attach them to a base.
We continued learning about the brain in our Kidfit classes and when Hisami was putting the picture of our brain into our backpacks, she asked us what we thought the picture was of. Zachary told her that it was a tree!
When we returned to our classroom on the second floor, we did our calendar and Ethan, Ryan and Clodia helped with the date. Then our teachers turned off the lights and we tried to imagine that we were bears waking up for the start of spring, after hibernating through the winter. We stretched and rolled our heads around and then breathed in deeply through our mouths and noses. We tried to feel our heart beat and then waited to see if it changed when we were resting. We practiced a few Yoga poses e. g. The Cat, The Dog, and the Table. Our teachers asked us if we could think of a Spring Pose and Ava said that we could try to be a sunflower while Olivia did a butterfly pose.
The last thing that we wanted to add was that today in the class on the first floor, four of the boys were dressed in green pants and Karl and Haruto were dressed exactly the same. They both had green pants and a blue shirt. So our teachers took some photos of them all; Zachary, Karl and Haruto.
Wishing everyone a great weekend! Have fun in the sun!
Love always
