Jungle snakes
This morning we started a new animal theme ‘Jungle animals’. On the table were two long cardboard tubes along with lots of tape. Some of the tape was wide and others were narrow. We could choose which colors we would like to use. On the table was also a book all about snakes. We soon guessed that we would be making snakes with the cardboard tubes. The teachers showed us firstly how to stick a small piece of the tape onto the table so that we could pull out a long piece with one hand.
Once we had pulled out a long piece we could then hold the roll with one hand and cut the tape using the other hand. We then took the long piece of
colored tape and wrapped it around the cardboard tube to make our stripy snake. We then made the head for the snake using a plastic container. Again we used the colored tape to cover the head and then glued on some wiggly eyes and a forked tongue. We didn’t have time to complete all of the snake and came back to it in circle time later to make sure all of the brown card areas are covered. Tomorrow
we will make the snake all wiggly using a saw. On the table next to the snakes we all did some painting with some black paint and cardboard. We are
going to make something special for our graduation party in June, (Sorry, it a secret). For this we used a large roller to coat the cardboard quickly and evenly. We also know that Sara will sadly be leaving us next week to return to Hawaii and so we started to make something special for Sara from all of her friends in Flower Class. We used sparkly, pens, markers and colored pencils to make a
special heart card for her bye-bye party. On the carpet area we saw there was a large easel with white board markers and a chalk board on the
other side. We really enjoyed drawing pictures on the board of our families and friends. After snack time we started to get ready for the park only to realize that it had started to rain outside. We were a little disappointed but knew that we would have gym time with Miyashita Sensei later in the morning anyway. In circle time we looked at a great book called ‘Hide Clyde’ which is all about a Chameleon who has trouble changing the right color abut eventually manages to change color after
being in a brightly colored house for a while. We then asked “Why did Clyde need to
change color”? Tokutaro then told us “so that he wouldn’t get eaten”. We thought of lots of jungle animals that are green and why they are green. We learnt a new word ‘camouflage’ and looked at a book with lots of animals hiding in the grass, snow, leaves and jungle. They all used their colored coats to hide from predators or to get close to their prey. We are going to make a ‘jungle’ picture and decided to make lots of green and black like in the jungle. We took some plastic and paper tape which we then glued onto a large cardboard tube and let it hang
down. As we add more things to it we will be able to hide our jungle animals behind it and hope they are ‘camouflaged’. After sticking on the tape Miyashita Sensei arrive to start our gym class. We did some new activities today including rolling, hopping and a ‘gorilla’ game where we needed to run from one floor mat to another. We then moved to the tables to complete our cardboard tube snake by adding the last of the tape to the outside. Some of us even added a few more strands of tape to the jungle picture. We will add more and more this week
until it is quite difficult to see through.
Have a great afternoon.
All our love, Darren, Ayaka & Nanako
