Counting "Upside Down" Like Astronauts

Happy Wednesday! After weeks of almost daily graduation practice, we are back to our normal schedule today. Although, admittedly, we are a bit sad about it. Some of us kept singing the songs we love throughout the day!

BIRTHDAY PARTY

Today, we are celebrating two more of our friend’s birthdays, as our busy week continues. We are celebrating An’s and Co’s birthday! An’s mommy Ni and Co’s daddy Ch joined our celebration in Flowers class!

Hi told us that Co’s real birthday was on Saturday, June 3rd, while Ka told us that An’s birthday isn’t June 11th. How many more days until An’s real birthday?

Ka: 4 more days!

Before we can start, we need two things!

Hi: Card!

Da: Crown!

Co asked Hi to place the crown on her head and Hi to give her the birthday card! An asked Re to place the crown on her head and Ke to give her the card! Now they look the part!

Now we’re ready to play a little birthday celebrant trivia!

Somehow, to the surprise of their parents, both An and Co’s least favorite food are tomatoes!

After our little trivia game, Ni and Ch each prepared a book to read to us! Ni read Super Hero Like You by Ranj Singh, a book about real life super heroes like doctors, teachers, and many others! Ch read Poppy and Mozart by Magali Le Huche, a book that had buttons that played sounds and music when pushed! We really enjoyed listening to the stories! Thank you for reading to us!

An and Co had prepared gifts for us to take home! Thank you so much! We can’t wait to open them! Ni also prepared cupcakes, which An and Co served us. They were delicious! We enjoyed eating them together!

Thank you, Ch and Ni, for coming to our class and helping us celebrate Co’s and An’s birthday! We had fun!

 CIRCLE TIME

After returning from the park, as usual, we sat down on the floor in a circle and waited for our teacher to begin. Cameron asked us to sit in a pattern of girl, girl, boy. We tried getting into the right order, but it wasn’t working. Some of us were moving a lot, some not at all. Some were trying to coordinate where everyone should sit as others began to raise their voices louder and louder as the discussion went on. After some frustration, Cameron asked us to stop. He told us to try again, this time with the pattern boy, girl, boy, girl.

We tried again, but we came to the same conclusion. It wasn’t working, and we could barely hear each other as everyone tried to dictate where everybody else should be. Cameron stopped us again. We were going to try the same pattern again, but this time, without speaking. No sounds.

Quickly, we saw an improvement. We quietly moved around the classroom and looked at each other as we pointed and motioned where to sit. When a friend didn’t fully understand the body language, Hi and Co took that friend by the hand and gently led them into the pattern. Within five minutes, we were perfectly in order.

We learned that we don’t need to use our voice, especially our loud voice, to communicate with others. Cooperation seems to work better when everyone is calm and not being dictated to, and the room is quiet, allowing for space to think. Great teamwork Flowers!

QUESTION OF THE DAY – Do you want to be an astronaut?

We had time for one more job/profession to talk about today as our theme winds down. What is an astronaut?

Co: They fly in the sky!

Sh: People who fly in the space!

Ka: They fly to space and go to other planets. They go to different kind of planets.

How do they fly to space?

Ka: With a rocket ship! They cannot fly like a bird (flapping wings).

Au: They go in the rocket ship and fly in the space.

How do they get to space in the rocket ship?

Sh: They have astronaut costume and put in the rocket to Israel and then to space! The people count “upside down” like 2, 1, blastoff! The people with the microphone outside the rocket ship count.

We all tried to figure out what counting “upside down” means. Some of us tried to stand on our head with our feet in the air to count. Ka asked, “do you mean count backwards?”

Ka told us more about what she knows, “they cannot sit like that, they lie down inside the rocket ship. Because the rocket ship is not like a car. When you go to space, you exercise upside down. There is a window where you can see the sky.”

What does an astronaut need to wear in space?

Sh: They wear a helmet because the sun is too hot!

Ka: When you go to space, you cannot go with just a t-shirt. Space doesn’t have air, like trees, you need to wear special clothes. If you don’t wear it, you cannot breathe.

What do astronauts eat in space?

Da: They eat some juice, fish, strawberries, and crackers.

Au: Astronaut ice cream! It’s not like the ice cream from Daiei shop.

Some of us think that being an astronaut would be fun! We don’t think it would be scary, and besides, we want to eat astronaut ice cream!

Have a wonderful evening! See you tomorrow!

Love,

Flowers XOXO
