Magnets!

Happy Thursday everyone! We had a great day playing and learning more about magnets! Our question of the day today was, “Do you know any magnet tricks?”. Our friends mostly said no, but D showed the class that the could stick the magnet on the whiteboard, and everyone had an idea for a trick. They stuck them on cans, tables, and other things that magnets like and don’t like. Y told the class, “magnet don’t stick on books”. K said, “Look I can move the magnets” then put two magnets close together and they snapped together by themselves. K put two magnets facing each other then used the power of magnetism to push the other magnet, “the two magnets push!”.  After we had a little fun with the magnets Nimo told us he could do a trick with magnets and he would like to show us.

Nimo: What is this? (Copper wire)

K: Metal

Nmo: What do you think will happen if I touch the magnet with it?

K: Metal sticks on magnets, so that will stick on to the magnet.

D: It’s going to break.

B: It will Pop.

T: I think It’s going to stick.

Y: It’s going to fall down.

Nimo touched the magnet with the copper wire, but they didn’t stick.

K: No way! Why?

Nimo: Some metal don’t stick to magnets it seems. What do you think if I put the battery on the magnet?

K: It will bili bili (electrocute)

Y: Stick together.

H: Go down.

D: It will stick.

No surprise here, the battery stuck to the magnet. Next Nimo wanted to put the copper wire on the battery.

Y: Wire will go down.

T: It will fall.

H: Go down and break.

B: It might break, pop, and cut all the windows.

K: Maybe it will bounce.

Nimo put the copper wire on the battery and we were surprised to see it start to spin. Even though no one was touching it, the copper wire kept spinning and spinning.

T: I think the battery is giving the wire power.

Nice guess T! The system is very complicated so we didn’t dive too much into how it worked, but we appreciated some of the amazing things that magnets can do!

After our experiment we played some games with the stick magnets and paperclips! It was so much fun watching all the paperclips on the table stick to the magnet in an instant! We played a game where we stuck paperclips together using the power of magnetism. We all gave it a try to see how many we could join together. For our last activity, we got to be magicians! We linked a few paperclips together and stuck them on one magnet. Then we slowly brought the second magnet close to the paperclip and all of a sudden the paperclip started to float! Keeping the right distance from the paperclips falling down and sticking to the magnet was quite tricky, but it was a great way to practice our fine motor skills!

We had another great day at school! We can’t believe we only have two more school days until our graduation! Have a lovely evening and we will see you all again tomorrow!

Love,

Flowers
