PUMPKINS!
Today’s activity made us all busy as a bee in Flowers class. We drew something that we liked about our Sports Day. We are thankful to our families, moms, and dads for a fabulous sports day event we had yesterday. Everyone seemed to have lots of playing exciting games. The team sports we played helped us more to enjoy a healthy level of competition as we worked together to complete a task. It was indeed extra special because we spent the event with our families. We enjoyed drawing about Sports Day and happily shared about our drawing with Liezel. Here are some of the things we drew about the event:
D: This is the race and I’m number one. I’m with S, D, Ky, Au, B and Be. Mommy pushed me in the box.
Ky: I played soccer with Nimo. Mommy is pushing the box and I was inside the box.
K: I’m playing ball with Mommy. It’s sunny yesterday. I did race with Ri yesterday.
R: This is Ky and Mommy sitting on the mat. This is me playing and Ky is running.
Sh: I’m kicking the ball. Then we lined up because we need to line up for sports day because we take turns. I did run, jumping, sack race, and play with balls and more. I put something like this(medal) around my neck because I’m a winner.
Hi: I did run on sports day, I played with Liezel, Vieda, Daddy, Mommy. We sing a song.
An: I ran, and I played ball.
Hi: this is me Vieda, Liezel, Daddy K, R San is taking pictures. I did running, we lined up because we need to run with Daddy and everyone say, “hooray!”
On another table we did pumpkin carving with Vieda where we used special pumpkin carving tools which helped the carving easier! Vieda cut a huge opening on top so we could take out everything in the pumpkin. Using a large spoon, we scooped out the seeds and pulp of the pumpkin and removed some of the flesh. Some of us could smell the pumpkin flesh and said, “We don’t like the pumpkin smell!”. When Ka heard it, she replied, “Oh I like the pumpkin smell! It actually smells yummy!”. Then we worked on drawing the pumpkin face. The biggest challenge was the next step! With our teacher’s help, we tried our best to cut along the lines to make the face of the pumpkin. When all the face parts had been cut off, we all giggled because we thought that our pumpkin looked like it was smiling for real!
Since our visit to the post office, library and fire station are coming soon, we started to prepare our gifts for them. With Cameron’s help, we glued some origami paper cut-outs to decorate the tissue box cover. We will make sure that our presents are ready when we visit our community helpers!
CIRCLE TIME
We all gathered in a circle and learned the song “Pumpkin, Pumpkin on the Ground “. After singing the pumpkin song, some of us thought that it sounds familiar to which Hi commented, “It’s like Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star “. “I know this song!” Ti added. Liezel showed us the jack-o- lantern that we made in the morning. We found our pumpkin quite unusual. What could it be?
Ka: Actually, pumpkins don’t have eyebrows!
Ti: I just draw the lines.
Ky: later turn lights off and put lights inside.
Liezel: How did you make it?
Ka First we draw the eyes.
Ky: First draw the face, last you gonna cut it. We used knife.
Ti: Halloween cutter.
An thought the pumpkin should have ears, so she added the ears. Then Ky added the hair, and R drew the hands.
D: What if we put light in here (inside) so we can see in the dark.
We also thought that it would be good give pumpkin a name. We all agreed to call it a “Jack-o”.
Liezel: Did you take something out of the pumpkin?
Hi: Seeds!
Ti: Fiber! If you eat it, it will make you strong!
Li: Can you eat the pumpkin seeds?
Ky: Yes! First you gonna cook it.
Ar: No! Because growing.
Ky: We eat Ohana this one it’s good.
Ti: I think what Aria meant to say was, if you eat the seed the pumpkin will grow in your stomach.
Ki: If you eat the seed pumpkin will grow in your stomach!? Oh, my goodness!
What an interesting topic to talk about! Is it possible to eat pumpkin seeds? Maybe we can try to do it at home with our moms and dads. We wondered which part of the pumpkin we can eat. Or is it just the pumpkin itself? We had been having a wonderful chat about pumpkins as a “decoration” and went a little low when we mentioned that we could eat pumpkin. We discovered that most of our friends do not like eating pumpkin. We are happy to know that we can also be different with the foods we like! Lastly, we passed the pumpkin around and took turns in describing the pumpkin. It is heavy, very yucky, orange, smelly, smells like melon, and smells like water.
PARK TIME
We went treasure hunt at Arisugawa park today. We had a nice walk in this beautiful weather. We even sang our Flowers Class chant from our Sports Day on our way to the park! At the park, we had so much fun collecting acorns, rocks, twigs and autumn leaves in different shapes and sizes.
Please have a restful evening!
Love,
Flowers
