Peanut Butter Jelly
January 17, 2022
Hope everyone had a great weekend! It was nice to see our friends active and full of energy in our classroom. As we entered the room, it was filled with lots of fun activities that we could do today. Ohana is such a great place to discover many things around us and how they work with our senses. Of course, we value learning through our peers and teachers, but it is also important to learn from the environment that we live in. Today, we used lots of recycled materials to make pretend food with our friends.
Table Activities
One table was filled with newspaper and some spoons with tubs that we laid out. Liezel was patient with us as she explained what to do with the materials. She asked us to squeeze the strips of newspaper as much as we could until it became tiny that our hands could hold it nicely. We put them in the tub and mixed them all. Our friends moved their arms and spun the ladle to the best they could do with it. Great job, Buds friends! It was nice that our friends knew what to do, and they probably saw it from their loved ones who were cooking at home.
The other table was the continuation of Nanako’s shuji art with us. There were two mats, brushes and a tray of ink that we could use for our special calligraphy experience. It was lovely to see how we made the strokes effortlessly, as if it’s so natural for us to do it.
Floor activities
We had some sensory materials like looping beads, matching wood tiles, cups and hammering bars that we could play with. We combined these materials with some toy trucks and any vehicles that we could find from the box. Eventually, we created buildings using our Lego blocks. It was so entertaining that it kept us busy for quite a long time.
Circle time
After our free play time, we gathered around as usual and did some warm-up exercises. Moving and dancing are our favorite things to do and we couldn’t help show off our amazing dance moves at all times. It was great that we started to become more and more active because we need to spend energy to grow efficiently and boost our immune system.
When we sat down, Harry the Porcupine visited us and started talking a lot! He loved to talk and of course, we responded to him too. The conversation went on to something like this….
Harry: What do you like to eat today?
C: Ham and Cheese sandwich
R: Rice
T: Sandwich
Some of our friends also mentioned that they love to eat bread, onigiri, banana and strawberry. However, Harry said he’s pretty hungry now and would love to make a sandwich. So, we decided to read a “Peanut Butter Jelly” book. It was great to see how our friends enjoyed learning the steps to make the sandwich and it also went with a song. In the end, we used enjoyed using newspaper and paint as pretend sandwiches and gave them to our friend Harry. He loved every bit of it.
After eating, our friends offered some food that they found from the tub and even offered Harry something to drink. We got the cups and gave them to Harry, and oh boy…he drank so much!
Park time
We went to the park and discovered a fruit dropped from a tree. It was a persimmon. We opened it and saw some seeds. We love finding new things around us and this was another learning experience for everyone.
Thank you so much Ohana, for a great day! See you all again tomorrow!
Lots of love,
All the children from Buds Class
