Germs and our Superheroes Amazing Bodies!

Germs, germs, germs! We are aware that germs are so tiny that we could not see them with our eyes. How we wish they were large enough so we can stay meters away from them! Today, we learned a new equipment that makes tiny things appear bigger. It is quite a tricky word that we had to say more than one time to get it correctly! When Ak heard what it is called, he said, “I know MICROSOFT!”. Ad gently told him, “No, it’s microscope!”. Ak was so lucky because he said, “When I go to Ja’s house, I see that toy and I put dinosaur on and see”.

We made “creatures” that we think make us sick. Our friends immediately figured out that these “creatures” are called germs. We have finished making them and Vieda let us hold on to it while we were having our circle time.

Vieda: Why does your germ look like that?

Ak: Because I want to surprise everyone.

Ad: I think germs look messy because they are bad. My germs are going to put lots of coughs in people.

Ch: My germ eats people. It eats all things in the world.

Ri: (Can you eat germ) NO! (Are germs good for people?) NO… I don’t know.

Ke: My germ has long nose and eat people.

Then we showed our germ to our friends and paid attention to how they reacted to it! We got “Awwww! I’m scared!” or “I’m surprised!”.  On the white board, we saw a huge hand where we placed our germs on. The germs were all over the hand! Will that ever happen to our own hands? Are any of these germs look like the real one? Vieda asked us if we would like to see a photo of a real germ. Of course, now we know that the picture is taken under a microscope to make it look bigger. When we saw the real germ, our friends made some comments about it:

Kei: Oh, they are cute! We have bad germs and good germs in our body.

Am: Germs go into our mouth and into our body.

Ka: Hand is dirty, and we eat.

Now we know how a real germ looks like. It was a big surprise for us when we learned that germs multiply! What does multiply mean?

Ch: It starts with 8 then to 1 million!

          Ad: 8 to one thousand!

          Ak: To 20 hundred!

And we were also surprised to know that they do not just multiply, they grow, too! We were not quite sure how germs grow…

Am: Umm, they get happy birthdays!
Kei: Slowly growing so so so big, so much eating, stretching, sleeping, and not crying.

Am: We magically grow if we eat food, drink and sleep.

Well, it is amazing to note that germs grow the same way we grow. They eat! The big question now is, what do they eat?

          Am: Germs eat people.

          Ak: Muscles?

          Ka: Bones?

Am: What can they eat outside the body before they go inside?

Ke: I had ouchy bone and bug came inside and was so itchy.

Ka: Tummy gets ouchy and you need to go to the hospital.

It could have been better if germs enter our bodies with a full stomach, so they did not have to eat anything in us. However, it seems like that is not the case.

Our eyes got bigger and our jaws almost dropped when Vieda told us, “Germs eat your food. Germs steal food from your body and made a special thing called toxin. Toxin is a big word for us and none of us had any idea about it. We learned that these toxins have poison that make our bodies sneeze, or cough!

Ch: Poison… spiders have poison and it’s ouchy!

Am: Poison will make your body die.

Ka: You get ouchy in your tummy.

Ad: I think I’m sick because I keep sneezing.

          Am: I got snuffles.

Ak: Hi-chan all day nose coming out. It is two times she is sick.

It is good to know that germs are so tiny that it’s too impossible for us to see them. They are everywhere and can enter our bodies through our hands. Now we understand why it is important to wash our hands with soap.

Vieda told us that germs can spread through sneezing and coughing, too. Hence, we need to learn how to cover our mouths with our arms when we sneeze or cough. Nimo stood with a spray bottle filled with colored water while Vieda was in front of him holding a cardboard. We saw that even Nimo stepped farther away from the cardboard, the water from spray bottle wet the cardboard, as well as the floor. We did not expect that the spray bottle will be able to wet the cardboard from a distance, more so the floor!  Oh my! Our sneeze and cough could travel that far! Ad then said, “I will always cover my mouth when I sneeze next time”.

Germs may sound like bad guys in our body, but our amazing bodies are like the Superheroes that fight off these germs! By keeping a diet full of vegetables and fruits and regular exercise, we can be able to fight off these germs! How about the good germs? We have not talked about these good germs yet, but it is a relief to know that not all germs are “bad guys”.

So, let our Superheroes Amazing Bodies fight off these germs! Let us keep on eating healthy food and washing our hands diligently with soap and water.
