Vehicle Operator
We started our week with a peaceful Monday morning. We read books with our teachers and then began the circle time with a little stretching. Na said we should put our legs straight and so we did that a touch our feet with our hands. Hisami then suggested to hold our legs like a baby and Kai wanted to see if we could touch our hands together behind our back. When we were all relaxed we reflected on what we did last week.
Na: I bought things, sold things. There was a toy shop, flower shop, market and hat shop.
Wi: We got food, people got food.
Na: We took them home.
Kai: This week we have a different subject. Does anyone know what it is?... This week we will have vehicle operator. What is a vehicle operator?
Na: Vehicle you drive on it.
Wi: You need to control, hold on to it to make sure it don’t crash.
Kai: Yes that’s right. I’ll give you 30 secs to think about what kind of vehicles we have. What can you drive? What kind of machines?
Na: Airplane and boat.
Ed: Car
Hisami: Helicopter.
Lo: I don’t know.
Wi: Motorcycle
Kai: excavator
Br: Submarine. A submarine goes under water.
So: Train.
Zen: Police car
An: Subway
We then looked around the room at two big boxes and decided on what we should do with them. We looked at pictures and took a vote. The final verdict was to make an excavator with one and a fire truck for the other. We planned out what we needed to do before we got started.
Fire truck
This team consisted of Ed, Wil, So, Lo, Hisami and Annie. After carefully examining a fire truck, they planned on painting it first then making the different parts of the fire truck separately. After the painting was done they worked on the individual pieces. Ed made a long ladder with a basket on top for the firefighter and attached a hose to put out the fire. Wil made a red light for the top of the fire truck and windows which you can see some firefighters inside. He also made four black wheels and two front headlights.
Excavator
This team had Br, Na, Z and Kai. They wanted to make the pieces first, assemble it and then paint. Zen worked on making the arm and the wheels. Na and Br starting cutting the side of the box and made the hand for the arm. They pieced it all together with a mix of tape and hot glue gun. When it was all together it was time to paint!
We were so involved in the process we didn’t want to eat snack or play “Here comes the boulder”, our favorite game, we just wanted to work on the project!
Right before lunch, we moved our bodies to the rhythm of the drum and danced around a bit. It was a fantastic relaxing day filled with projects. We got a lot done but there’s still more we can add tomorrow. Hope you all had a great Ocean Day!
XOXO,
