No plastic in our Oceans!

It’s almost end of year! We feel so grateful for everyone who supported us to grow Bigger and Bigger!

On the art table, one teacher helped guide us on how to use the scissors safely and cut some paper. We remembered last term that we always needed guidance from our teachers and made sure we held the paper while cutting. This time, most of our friends were able to cut the paper by themselves into tiny bits. Our friends were seemed very proud of themselves when they stuck the cut out papers onto a construction paper by using a glue stick. There were pegs and clothe pins which they could attach to yawn. During cleaning up time, many friends stayed there to take off the clothe pins as much as they could.

Right after we cleaned up all the toys, one of our friends walked to Chiaki and said, “You need to wear this hat because today is your birthday!” The friend put the hat on Chiaki and when they went to the carpet area, Nimo started to play Ukulele and sang Happy Birthday song with both English and Japanese. We also gave a huge hug to her. Happy Birthday, Chiaki!!

After celebrating Chiaki’s birthday, we gathered to made a big circle for circle time. We started to our circle time by singing our good morning song. All the friends said their name with an energetic voice. Then Chiaki announced to our friends that today is H’s last day at Ohana. She asked friends, “How do you feel if our friend is not come to school anymore?” and they said, “I feel sad…” Chiaki kindly asked H what song she would like to sing together with her friends, and she requested “Twinkle Little Star”, “Ba Baa Black Sheep” and “Ariel song’. Nimo played the Ukulele for us and sang those songs together. The teachers didn’t know the words to the Ariel song, so O sang the song in front of all her friends all by herself. It was beautiful!

Next, Chiaki showed us a mysterious plant which K brought for our friends. First, we guessed what it could be. Our guess were grapes. So we all tried to smell and touch it. Hmmm, we did not smell anything at all and it was harder than grapes…… When Tamara took her turn to look at it, she realized that we could peel the hard skin. She peeled the skin and what we found was brown seeds! What a surprise! Yet, we have no clue about the name of plant so we are going to investigate the plant to find out the name!

After that, Chiaki brought clear empty box filled with water and. She said, we are going to do a sink or float experiment. First, she showed some sea creatures and asked friends if they are going to be under the water or stay on top of the water. When she put a shark in the box, it went under the water which meant it sank. We tried several sea creatures, such as small fish, octopus and squid and all sank. We continued the experiment by using natural materials.

Sticks, pinecones and flowers….float

Shells and rocks… sink

Lastly, she brought a plastic bag to see what will happen. The plastic floated on the water, yet, we wondered how the plastic bag effect to the sea creatures.

L: They cannot eat that.

O: They can use their hands to take the plastic bag off (when the fish were wrapped by the plastic bag).

C: Shark can use his teeth to take the bag off.

Chiaki: Do you think fish are happy to swim with the plastic bags?

All friends: No! Sad.

Chiaki: Do you think fish feel sad?

All friends: yes…

Chiaki: So, what can we do if we found the plastic bags at the beach and ocean?

L: We can pick it up and throw it in the garbage.

C: We can also give it to the garbage man.

Thank you so much friends! They really care for our fish buddies and we know what we can do to save our ocean ;)

After the snack time, we played “Duck, Duck, Goose” game and music session with Nimo.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Love,
