Happy Friday! It’s the last day of our mountain themed week of summer school.
CIRCLE TIME
We began with a bit of a review for what we learned this week. What are the two ways that mountains are formed?
S: The plates smash together, and a triangle is made.
M: The lava makes mountains.
K: The lava comes out the top and goes all the way down.
We learned about something else called an avalanche. T told us a bit more.
T: Snow goes down the hill and everything is white and snowy, and everyone freezes.
We watched a video of a real avalanche, which showed how powerful they are.
S: The avalanche is so fast! It’s explosion!
Y: Now it’s coming to us!
K: The snow is breaking.
Why do we think an avalanche happens?
S: The snow wants to have fun!
T: Mountains are triangles so it will go down the hill.
We did an experiment to see how the angle of the ground effects the stability of things. We placed some toy mountain animals on a flat piece of cardboard and slowly increased the angle until the animals fell down one by one. The toy bear was the last to fall!
QUESTION OF THE DAY
Can you play in the mountains? What kind of mountain activities can you do, or have you done before?
M: You can ski.
T: Snowboard. Snowboard and skiing are different.
M: With snowboarding, you don’t have the sticks.
J: I went to Mount Fuji. I didn’t snowboard, I just punch.
Y: You can do snowball fight.
Then we looked at pictures of a few other mountain activities.
S: Hiking! They have sticks! Ojiichan need it!
J: Mountain biking is dangerous!
Y: Fishing!
T: I went fishing before. It’s tricky. You have to wait forever!
D: I want to go camping!
Y: Rock climbing!
Let’s all go to the mountains to escape the summer heat and have lots of fun!
K’S BIRTHDAY PARTY
K is celebrating his 5th birthday tomorrow, so we had a small party to celebrate with him in class today! After giving him a birthday crown and singing happy birthday to him, we asked him 5 questions to get to know him better.
M: What’s your favorite food?
K: Cake and apples!
J: What’s your favorite lunch?
K: Pizza and spaghetti!
J: What drink do you like?
K: Milk!
D: What’s your favorite toy?

T: What’s your favorite car?
