Paper Play!

Good morning Petals Parents and welcome to Ohana Summer School!

To start our Paper Play week, we did some Origami! Today our teachers taught us how to fold a dog! After we finished folding our puppy, we used the colored pencils to draw the face! Our teachers held on to our crafts because we will do origami everyday for the rest of this week and then our teachers will put it all together on a big piece of paper for us to take home! During our morning free play time, we played with the kitchen toys and had fun pretending to be chefs!

For circle time, we introduced ourselves to our new friends and then sang our Good Morning song and updated our calendar. We spent a good amount of time talking about the three big classroom rules, Gentle Hands, Walking Feet, and Indoor Voices. We especially focused on “Gentle Hands”. We talked about how it is okay to be angry, but it is not okay to give our friends ouchies. Our teachers reminded us that we are big boys and big girls so we can use our words when something happens we don’t like. We can try saying, “Stop it, please”, “No thank you”, or “I don’t like it”. If we feel very angry, we can try taking deep breaths to calm down. We can also ask a teacher for help.

Nimo: How does this person look in this picture? (Angry)

R: Angry.

Nimo: Is it okay to be angry?

T: No.

Nimo: It is okay to be angry, but it isn’t okay to use ouchie hands.

K: No bite.

T: Oh no… boo boo. Stop!

K: No fighting.

Nimo: If everyone follows our classroom rules, no one will get hurt and everyone will be?

S: Happy!

Our main project for Paper Play is to make our very own piece of paper! We started by taking some scrap paper out of our junk box and used our strong fingers to tear the paper into tiny pieces! Once we shredded the paper into small pieces we put them in a bucket full of water!

T: (The water in the bucket is) Cold

S: Wet.

K: I want to touch!

We will let the paper soak in water overnight then we will start the next step in our paper making! After circle time, we noticed it was still raining outside so we had Gym Class! Just before we moved out bodies, we read, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See” by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle. We first talked about how Eric cut different colors of paper to make his special art! Once we finished the story, we stretched our bodies, did some warm up exercises then did the movements of the animals we saw in the book!

Nimo: What colors do you see (Rainbow)?

T: Blue!

R: Brown.

K: Purple.

S: Green.

K: Pink.

S: Yellow.

K: Blue.

R: Red.

Thank you very much for a fabulous first day! We greatly appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we adjust to a new platform. Please fill in our child’s weekly/monthly attendance in the Codmon App. Please remember to also fill in the drop off and pick up times for each day.
